Richard Leonard maintained his status as the preferred candidate of the broader Labour movement after receiving the backing of two more trade unions: the giant public services union UNISON and the bakers’ union BFAWU.

This brings the total number of unions backing the central Scotland MSP to six. Richard Leonard MSP is the only candidate to have received a union nomination so far in the contest.

Richard Leonard said:

“I am thrilled with these two latest nominations. UNISON members provide many of our most vital public services and I will always stand with public service workers.

“It’ s also great to have the support of BFAWU, a union that is doing such great work and breaking new ground in bringing trade unionism to put-upon workers in the fast food industry.”

UNISON Labour Link Scotland Chair Gordon McKay said:

“UNISON Labour Link is pleased to nominate Richard Leonard. He has consistently supported our values and understands that we need real and bold change in Scotland. We share Richard’s vision of a society based on full employment in a sustainable economy, funding properly our public services, providing dignity for our pensioners and hope for our young.”

Ronnie Draper, General Secretary of the food workers' union BFAWU said:

“The BFAWU is proud to nominate Richard Leonard as the next leader of the Scottish Labour Party, a trade unionist who has spent his life supporting the causes of working people. We are a campaigning union and need a leader who will support our drive to lift people out of poverty, end the unjust abuse of zero hour contracts and fight for a better future for all. We believe Richard Leonard is the leader to do that and to bring Scotland back to Labour.”
