The party in Scotland needs a man steeped in Labour values and who will lead a principled Labour Party back into power to bring about the real change that people need.

The time has come to stop sugar-coating the obvious facts: Labour still has the shadow of a rather murky recent history hanging over it. Only by visibly stepping out of it can the party begin to truly rebuild in Scotland, a place where major past mistakes, none more stark than its involvement in the horrendous Better Together campaign, are never bound to be forgotten in a hurry. Why else does Scottish voter turnout continue to flatline? Why else is public confidence in politicians showing little sign of rising? Why else, more to the point, did Labour’s core support-base ever find itself running into the arms of the Nationalists in the first place? Answer: the perception that the party had simply become a cheap imitation of the Tories or the Liberal Democrats, leaving people with thoughts of abandonment of principle, the dire prospect of a virtual one-party state, and the underlying distrust of those parties being ignored. No-one wants the copycat when the original remains on offer. What we need is for Labour to expose the SNP as being the ones doing the same to them, and not the reverse. Traditional values underpinning the labour movement may have, until recently (thanks to a certain leadership election), been shut out of the national conversation for a long time, but this should never have been a deterrent. If anything, that only happened because Labour moving away from it would have been taken as an indicator, by the media and others, that they no longer needed to pay any attention to it. Why would they when its main champion was no longer standing up for it, instead capitulating and posturing in order to follow the narrative? Labour needs to lead. Voters admire this, especially if they can make a convincing case for it. Let us refrain from running away. Soundbite politics simply cannot save this country. This is the age of conviction politics. Jeremy Corbyn has proven that in the recent General Election, and now the next phase must commence. Richard Leonard is the man to remind the nation why Labour exists, what it was set up to represent, and why it really is the only option for those who want real progressivism, with no agenda other than to improve people’s lives and create a society we can all be proud of – without having to set Scotland ‘free’ of the Union. Some want to break the UK up in the belief that it cannot be reformed. This party is the one that I believe is supposed to be brave and tenacious enough to make an effort towards proving otherwise, however many people may laugh at the prospect. If anyone, with Jeremy and Alex walking alongside, can make this a reality, that someone is Richard Leonard.

Hope at last for Scottish Labour with Richard Leonard! He is a true Labour – not New Labour – man, working alongside Jeremy Corbyn to bring fairness and honesty back into politics and society.
